So you’re thinking of moving to Seattle and have no clue where you wanna live? There’s a ton of neighborhoods in this city and when I was moving out here I was overwhelmed with all the choices. So before you make the big leap, let’s chat about Fremont a little.
I’m not going to give you the history of this neighborhood or the price point. That information changes all the time and it would be impossible for me to continually keep up with. So instead, I want to give the vibe of this neighborhood. I want you to know exactly if this is the right place for you.
THE PEOPLE
People in Fremont are a little different than other neighborhoods, and I mean this in the best possible way. They are creative, lively and a little weird (and again in the best possible way). They walk to their own beat and for some reason, I feel like they always have a type of happiness to them that I don’t always find in Seattle neighborhoods.
According to Area Vibes the average age in Fremont is around 32 and the population is around 12,4000. Statistics aside there’s a wide range of ages when it comes to Fremont. I’d say there is a large group of mid to late 20 somethings strolling around this city, and of course there’s older and younger people.
THE VIBE
When you’re moving to Seattle it can be hard to define what vibe it is your looking for. So let me sum up Fremont for ya!
Fremont is a free bird type of neighborhood. Wow-what a sentence – but it really is. When I strolled through this neighborhood I wanted to come up with a few keywords that I felt really defined in this neighborhood. Here’s what I came up with: Active, Lively, Lush, and Artsy.
DEFINING FREMONT
Active: When I was walking around I couldn’t believe how many people were out doing things. Fremont is right on Lake Union (more specifically the Fremont Cut) and that draws a lot of people to get outside. When I walked near the water I saw so many people rollerskating, skateboarding, biking, hammocking (is that even a word – the answer is no) and lots of people walking their dogs. SO MANY DOGS!
Lively: There’s a lot going on in this neighborhood. Every year they have a huge Solstice Parade which is the best time. People paint their naked (sometimes clothed) bodies and ride bikes. I know that sounds kinda crazy – but man is it a blast. So much happiness. Fremont also has a ton of great little venue’s for music, comedy, slam poetry, and more. One of my favorite venue’s is The Abbey.
Lush: With large dinosaur hedges to vines growing up most of the buildings, I had to put this word on my list. Fremont is so lush and green, and that’s for sure part of it’s charm. Seattle in general is a very lush city but damn @ Fremont. They have plants I’ve never seen in Seattle.
Artsy: Of course I had the put artsy down. Remember the Fremont Troll in 10 Things I Hate About You? It’s a site to see and the art just begins there. There are murals and sculptures sweeping Fremont, everywhere you walk you see something new. They even have a rocket ship right downtown.
THE DOWNTOWN
Fremont has one of my favorite downtown areas. They’ve got so many different shops, restaurants and breweries. A few of my favorites are as follows:
OVERALL THOUGHTS
Honestly, after taking a day to walk around Fremont I was sad to leave. I forgot how much I loved this little neighborhood. They’ve got such great energy going on there and there’s always something going on. If you’re moving to Seattle this is a great little neighborhood! Let me know if you’ve been and your thoughts!
